Hiking in the Engadin—all year round
Hiking in the Engadin isn't just a summer activity.
In the summer, Scuol’s high altitude makes it an ideal retreat from the heat of the cities.
In the fall, the famous golden larch forests offer spectacular colors that often last well into November.
Spring arrives a little later in the Alps, but starting in May, the mountains come to life with wildflowers and fresh green meadows.
Even in winter, there are beautiful winter hiking trails, such as sections of the Via Engiadina, which connect the villages of the Lower Engadine.
No matter the season, the countryside around Scuol offers countless opportunities to explore the mountains on foot.
.
The ÜJA Boutique Hotel is the perfect starting point for hikes in the Engadin.
The Hotel ÜJA is a hiking hotel in Scuol in the Engadin and is ideally located for exploring panoramic hiking trails, Alpine valleys, and picturesque routes such as the Via Engiadina. Many hikes begin right in the village, and the cable car to Motta Naluns quickly takes you to the high-Alpine hiking area at an elevation of over 2,000 meters.
At the same time, the hotel is just a few steps away from the Stradun, Scuol's bustling main street lined with cafés, bakeries, and small shops.
After a day in the mountains, many guests enjoy relaxing on our terrace, which offers a beautiful view of the Engadin mountains —often with a cool drink in hand as the evening light settles over the valley.
And in the morning, our fresh and healthy breakfast made with regional products ensures the perfect start to another day outdoors.

Our Favorite Hikes Around Scuol
🥾 Motta Naluns – Schlivera – Mot da l’Hom – Alp Laret
🥾 Lai Nair
🥾 S-Charl and the Swiss stone pine forests
🥾 Val Tasna
Below are some of our favorite hikes in the region.
Motta Naluns – Schlivera – Mot da l’Hom – Alp Laret
One of our favorite hikes begins with the cable car ride to Motta Naluns, the hiking area above Scuol.
From the mountain station, the trail leads via Schlivera to Mot da l’Hom, a viewpoint at an elevation of nearly 2,500 meters offering a spectacular view of the Lower Engadine.
From there, the trail leads down to Alp Laret, where a stop on the terrace is highly recommended—the Kaiserschmarren is famous for a reason.
This hike combines everything the Engadin is known for: vast Alpine landscapes, breathtaking views, and traditional mountain huts.
Lai Nair
Lai Nair, a small mountain lake above Tarasp, is one of the most peaceful places in the Lower Engadine.
The hike is relatively easy and is perfect for a relaxing half-day outing.
This area is especially beautiful in the fall, when the surrounding forests turn golden and the tranquil lake reflects the colors of the Engadin “Indian Summer.”
In the summer, it's also a wonderful place to cool off with a swim or simply enjoy the peaceful natural surroundings.
S-Charl and the Swiss stone pine forests
The remote valley of S-Charl feels like another world.
Nearby is the famous God da Tamangur, the highest contiguous pine forest in Europe.
Hiking here is very different from the open Alpine landscapes above Scuol. The hiking trails wind through ancient Swiss stone pine forests, quiet valleys, and unspoiled nature.
It's the perfect destination for anyone who wants to enjoy a quieter and more secluded hiking experience.
Val Tasna
If you're looking for true solitude in the mountains, Val Tasna is a wonderful place to explore.
The valley stretches between Ftan and the high-alpine regions above Scuol and is known for its vast meadows, clear mountain streams, and peaceful hiking trails.
Compared to some of the more popular hikes in the region, Val Tasna often seems wonderfully unspoiled—a place where you can simply take a walk and enjoy the silence of the mountains.
